Yes, I’m still doing my month of all things NEW in diet, fitness and beauty – and look what new book has appeared on my desk……
I’m not training for a marathon right now (and can’t see it happening again for a while) but that didn’t stop me reliving past glories and checking out the book. Which was fortunate as I discovered a handy tip I had never heard before. It was to do with how you should correlate your breathing with your stride rate.
Apparently doing so correctly decreases the amount of energy you expend with each step – which is important over distances like a marathon where you want to conserve as much energy as possible. They therefore recommend you should aim to take 3-4 steps per breath if you’re on a long slow run and decrease that to two steps per breath if you’re doing speed work. Also, aim to exhale as your foot hits the ground.
I’m still banned from running so I can’t try it, but someone reading this, have a go and let me know how you get on.
