How to Breathe While Running

Yes, I’m still doing my month of all things NEW in diet, fitness and beauty – and look what new book has appeared on my desk……

I’m not training for a marathon right now (and can’t see it happening again for a while) but that didn’t stop me reliving past glories and checking out the book. Which was fortunate as I discovered a handy tip I had never heard before.  It was to do with how you should correlate your breathing with your stride rate.

Apparently doing so correctly decreases the amount of energy you expend with each step – which is important over distances like a marathon where you want to conserve as much energy as possible. They therefore recommend you should aim to take 3-4 steps per breath if you’re on a long slow run and decrease that to two steps per breath if you’re doing speed work. Also, aim to exhale as your foot hits the ground.

I’m still banned from running so I can’t try it, but someone reading this, have a go and let me know how you get on.

If you want to buy the book it’s by Jason R Karp and published by Wiley. You’ll find it out now in bookstores and on sites like amazon. Here’s a link Running a Marathon For Dummies

I think it’s so important to know how to breath properly when doing any type of workout. I know when I first started running or working out I would sometimes hold my breath when things got really hard.

I still do – apparently it’s one of the reasons why my stomach bloats when I work really hard at the gym! Back to running now so going to give this a try myself now.
