About 8 years ago I fell in love. Not with a person, with a place. A place with blue sky and boats, sunshine and schooners and some of the most awesome people I’ve ever met in my life. You know it as Sydney. I call it home, my happy place, land where my heart lives. I thought I’d live there for ever but life doesn’t work like that (enter The Boyfriend, aka the only British man in Australia who wanted to leave) but not a day goes by when I don’t wish I was back there.
On Dec 15th my Facebook timeline started to fill with comments from friends in the city. Friends who were thankfully okay but watching unfold what was going to be known as the Sydney Siege. Two people, Tori Johnson and Katrina Dawson, died that day and if you look at the floral tribute that’s been placed in their honor you’ll see a city coming together. A city, as one tweet has said, of mates who band together when the going gets tough.
Today I was reading twitter and a US runner I follow @pavementrunner started talking about #runwithsydney. And the idea is this.
On Dec 22nd at 6.30pm a group of runners will get together in Sydney and run in tribute. Tribute to those who died but also in honour of mateship. The organiser Rebecca is an American living in Sydney and so PavementRunner and a few other people are organising US runs – and they’re hoping other countries will follow suit. I’m not in London that day or I’d have been taking on that job, but maybe one of you guys could help? Or my Auckland buddies, how about you?
Or you can just run alone, or with a friend, which is what I’ll be doing. Dedicating my run on Dec 22nd to the city I love.
