Workout Mantra: Go Hard or Go Home

Today’ I’m trying a little workout I call ‘Go Hard – or Go Home.’ The name came after I interviewed a  New Zealand fitness instructor at Les Mills a few years ago who said it summed up the kiwi attitude to fitness. Her theory was that kiwi women can’t see the point of going to the gym and walking on the treadmill while reading a magazine (a common sight in London gyms at the time). If they are there, they are there to sweat. I immediately stopped taking a book to the gym – and while I admit, I don’t work as hard as I should on a number of my sessions, I don’t slack off as much as before either.

Go Hard or Go Home is simple – I do six minutes on a piece of equipment – but during that time I go harder or faster than I want to . It isn’t always full out, sometimes it’s just 1% harder than I want to go, but the idea is that I’m out of my comfort zone the whole time. Why six minutes? It’s the longest I can sustain the thought of working hard for – any more than that I go into sulky rebellious teenage ‘I can’t do it, it’s too hard’ mode and get off half way in.

When I finish one machine, I move onto the next and again go all out for six minutes – yesterday’s circuit was crosstrainer, run, bike, rower, eliptical thingy and it was good.

The Summing Up Bit

For those who don’t read this blog in succession or who have somehow found their way here via google (what on earth were you searching for?) for the last 30 days, I’ve been aiming to workout every single day for 30 minutes trying as many new ideas as possible. This is my last post of the challenge and as far as I can see it, at the end of every challenge in life you have to do the ‘what I learned’ message bit – otherwise, what’s the point of doing something. So here’s what I have discovered….

  • I do not need The Boyfriend to drive me to the gym. It’s a two hour round trip when he doesn’t take me, but I can go.

  • I do not need to go to the gym to exercise – between apps, dancing round the lounge and good old running, you can exercise anywhere.

  • Rain does not make you melt – I still don’t like running in it, but I do not shrivel up if it touches my skin.

  • 30 minutes can fitted in to any day – yes, even a 14 hour at your desk one, if you make the time to do it instead of trying to find the time to do it.

  • Exercise classes do not fit easily into my life – or my psyche. I had all good intentions of trying lots of new ones for the challenge, but I just don’t have the life that makes scheduling a firm time to workout possible. Plus, the humiliation factor is still too great.

  • I really enjoyed having a reason to blog each day – so, tomorrow a new challenge begins. I’m still going to keep up the 30 mins a day exercise – and that will be part of the new challenge, but there are lots of other things to tell you about and so that’s what’s coming next.
