How to Tackle The Post-Run Munchies: Anyone?

Today’s post is a break from tradition. Instead of attempting to be useful, I’m asking for advice.

Four weeks ago I started doing the Parkrun on a Saturday morning. It’s a 5k timed run, and I’ve actually surprised myself at how fast I’m going (okay, so I haven’t yet quite broken 30 minutes, but speed is relative, I’m running faster than I have for about six years). However, there is a problem. I’M STARVING.

The run is at 9am. I get home at 10am. I then fixate on food until lunchtime – and pretty much for the rest of the day. Seriously, I was eating lunch at 11am this morning – I had a chicken salad (heavy on the chicken) – I was satisfied for about two hours (an hour of which I spent asleep – this fast running thing is also very tiring), now I wish to eat everything in the fridge again. And when there’s as much cheese in the fridge as there is normally at our house this isn’t a helpful thing to spend your weekend doing.

My gut feeling is I’m not eating enough prior to the run – this morning I ran on a protein shake, last week it was fruit and popcorn (slightly tragic but we hadn’t been shopping) but the really strange thing is, I’m also doing long slow runs on a Sunday. They don’t trigger this same unbearable urge for food. ย Last week. I didn’t eat before I ran, ran for almost five miles, got back at 11am and didn’t have lunch until 1ish and was happy as a clam.

Does this happen to anyone else? And if so, why do you think it is – and how do you fix it without inhaling the fridge or slowing down how fast you go? All advice gratefully received.

    From my experience (talking to lots of fitnessy people and being a fitnessy person myself) I find that it’s usually from a lack of proper pre-run nutrition. Not necessarily the amount of food but the kind of food. If I go out with just carbs in my belly I”m dying by the time I get back and want to shove the whole fridge in my mouth! But if I have something like eggs and little oat meal I do better. Also, I recently started taking these things called Energy Bits (spirulina algea tabs) which have a ridiculous number of benefits and really really help with being ‘rungry’. Hope that was helpful. ๐Ÿ™‚

    I’ve had the same issues since I started going to my local Parkrun, although I think I may have cracked it (for me anyway). For the last three weeks I’ve had a small bowl of cereal at about 8am (Special K type stuff), then when I get back I have a banana and whatever I would normally have for breakfast (usually either a veggie sausage sandwich or scrambled eggs on toast). So far I’ve found this has satisfied me and I don’t feel like tipping the fridge into my mouth.

    I think the problem with Parkrun is that it’s too early for you to have a substantial breakfast before it – as you’d need to get up mega early which is, I believe, against the law on a Saturday, but you need to have something or, if you’re like me, you’ll flag halfway round and collapse in a pathetic heap.
