It’s time to Fartlek people….

Want to feel the wind in your hair as you workout like the fluffy fellow above – it’s time to try Fartlek

Today was one of those days when normally exercise would not enter my consciousness. Waaaay too much work and a fridge containing solely a piece of beetroot and some crusty cheese meant shopping needed to be done. This meant time was tight. I had 25 minutes to workout. I had to choose quality over quantity. It was time to Fartlek.

For those not up on their running terminology. Fartlek is Swedish for speed play. It sees you combining spurts of fast moves with bouts of recovery. So far so interval training you may say. Not quite. With intervals you have set amounts of time to go fast or slow. With Fartlek  how your body feels tells you what to do. I don’t do it often as normally on a run my body is telling me to head back home and sit on the sofa, but today after four days of slacking off and 11 hours at my desk it needed to run….

And run it did. I started sprinting, alternated jogs and sprints in the middle, walked up the hill I hate, then sprinted down it with my hair streaming out behind me. 25 mins later I was home. It was the best 25 minutes of my day.
