Work is taking over a bit at the moment so my evenings are spent vegging on the sofa watching Gossip Girl. I love Gossip Girl – in fact I love all US teen television – and not surprisingly while half of my time is spent debating who is more handsome this season Ed Westwick or Penn Badgley (normally Westwick wins hands down, but Badgley’s hair is doing something interesting this year) the other part of my time is spent envying pretty much everything about Blake Lively. A while back I was lucky enough to interview her trainer Bobby Strom and I picked up a few tips from him
His epiphany: ‘I’ve realised that you can go to the gym 5 times a week, but if you don’t change what you do outside the gym nothing will happen. You have to eat healthily as well as exercise – it’s synergy.’
The program he thinks works best: ‘I get people doing lots of fast repetitions. 15-20 for beginners, 20-25 if you exercise more often. You’ll use a lighter weight than you’re used to, but it should still be one where you’re struggling at the end. Not only do I think this gives a more toned, shaped look, it also raises your heart rate burning fat.’
The rule his clients shouldn’t break: ‘If you’re in the gym you have to give 110% attention and intensity. There’s no reading, no texting, no talking – it’s a waste of a workout.’
Now normally I’m a member of the 12 reps of the heaviest weight I can lift school of resistance work, but I recently I’ve been mixing up my sets to do one or two sets of heavy, then one or two of lighter weights – I was doing it as a happy compromise as I was tired but determined to get the reps in, now I know it might get me a Blake body I might keep it up!
