Drawing Food Makes Us Happy

Okay folks – it’s time to get out the pad and crayons, we’re going to get creative.

According to some recent research I spotted today drawing food makes us happy. And, as a knock on effect could potentially help those who are eating to cheer themselves up just say no to comfort foods. According to the trial drawing pizza makes people happiest, drawing cupcakes comes a close second, strawberries third – though forget getting arty with a pepper/capsicum. Drawing those didn’t cheer anyone up.

Now you’d think that drawing pictures of yummy dough with melty gooey cheese on top might make you hungry – but no, say the researchers. Hunger didn’t change, the only thing that altered was how happy people felt.

I don’t know about you but after my art teacher basically told me that I couldn’t draw for toffee, drawing stuff doesn’t actually make me happy. In fact, the idea of putting pen to paper while I’m feeling down is more likely to send me off into a pity party of uselessness from which the only escape is pizza than it is see me skipping happily off to the art supplies store to stock up on watercolours, but maybe that’s just me. I do admit to having used a colouring book to help distract me from cravings in the past though. All that trying not to go over the lines is very absorbing.
