Yay – I’ve got my hands on a sample of the ‘sold out, we’ve got a waiting list’ new Strength Within anti-wrinkle supplement from DoveSpa (www.dovespa.co.uk). It’s making waves as it’s one of the few anti-aging treatments to go through double blind clinical trials – in other words, the women taking the pill didn’t know if they were on an active version or a placebo – and neither did the docs.
Results seem to indicate an average 10 percent reduction in crow’s feet after 14 weeks. Admittedly, Botox completely eliminates mine in 14 days, but this contains health boosting things like omega-3 fats, soy isoflavones, vitamin C and lycopene, so, supplies willing (I’ve only got one box!) I’m going to try it for the next three months. I’ll let you know more then.
For those of you who like the science bit, theory has it the results come firstly because the isoflavones activate the oestrogen receptors in the body that are partly involved with collagen production – that’s why you notice a major increase in wrinkles past about 35, as oestrogen falls so does collagen production (someone really needs to redesign the female body!). There’s also however a belief that the fish oil component acts on genes that control collagen synthesis – a fifth of the post menopausal women popping the pills were shown to be producing new collagen in the trials. Trying to manipulate genetic expression is huge news in beauty at the moment with companies like Avon, Lancome and L’Occitane all claiming their products have an impact. Check out my piece in November’s Red magazine (UK) for more on this side of things (yep, shameless plug there, I admit it).
New Scientist magazine wrote a big piece about the science behind Strength Within if you really want to get into technical details. Right now, skin care supplements are in their infancy, but you can expect to hear a lot more about them in the future as we create molecules small enough to penetrate the skin’s inner layers.
Update: Strength Within Discontinued
Since I wrote this post, Dove seem to have discontinued Strength Within (please let me know in the comments if I’m wrong about this but I can’t seem to find it anywhere). However, there is a product with extremely similar ingredients on the market called Nurture Replenish. It has the same active ingredients within it as the sold out Dove Spa Strength Within supplement I mentioned before. It doesn’t have the double blind placebo trials, but it’s a good combination of science and price. It’s called Day-Night Skin Nutrition Supplement and you can buy it online
Also, look out for ingestible supplements made from collagen – there are big news. I’ve tried two of them so far and the results are in the posts below …
